"Tactile Simulacra explores digital possibilities while embracing Ajrakh’s handcrafted imperfections."

Tactile Simulacra challenges the narrative that technology threatens traditional craft by exploring how it can instead enhance its value. This project reimagines Ajrakh hand-block printing in a digital context, questioning whether its unique imperfections—gaps, misalignments, and variations—can be intentionally recreated in a digitally produced garment to evoke the same tactile and visual essence as the handcrafted process. By deliberately integrating digital 'imperfections,' Tactile Simulacra examines whether technology can authentically capture the soul of Ajrakh, preserving its artistry while pushing the boundaries of craft and innovation.

COLOUR STORY

SURKH (RED)

For this project, I used prints that are traditionally associated with Ajrakh. These motifs were then digitally manipulated to introduce slight ‘imperfections,’ ensuring that no two motifs are identical—emulating the organic variations characteristic of hand-block-printed Ajrakh textiles.

The print motifs were sourced online and later refined in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create a seamless pattern. Special attention was given to individually altering each motif to retain the authenticity of Ajrakh craftsmanship. The aim was to preserve the essence of the craft while integrating digital techniques.

I used these prints to design two jackets in CLO 3D. The colour palette was carefully selected to reflect the authentic hues used in Ajrakh dyeing, reinforcing the connection to its traditional roots. Every effort was made to ensure that the digital prints captured the depth, richness, and authenticity of true Ajrakh prints.
